Here's the secret of designers who seem to release a new animal every week: they don't design a new animal every week. They design one good standing body — head, torso, legs, a nub tail — and let the ears, snout and colors do the species work. The Animal Base ships deliberately plain: a round head, a pear body, small round ears, standing legs and a little tail. No markings, no snout — because a plain base is the one that can become anything.
What is an amigurumi animal base?
An animal base is the amigurumi version of a mannequin: a reusable, species-neutral body plan with proportions that already read as a cute standing critter before any features are added. It answers the questions every animal pattern has to answer — how big is the head relative to the body, how long are the legs, where do the ears sit — once, correctly, so you never have to answer them again.
Ours is tuned for the chibi look that dominates modern amigurumi: an oversized round head, a compact pear-shaped body it stacks onto, and legs just long enough that the finished animal stands on a shelf without leaning. Those ratios are frozen into the pattern — what you customize is the species, not the skeleton.
And it's a complete pattern, not a sketch: round-by-round instructions in plain US terms for every piece, numbered assembly steps that reference real round numbers, and a materials list with yarn amounts, hook size, safety eye size and stuffing weight.
One crochet animal body pattern, a whole zoo
The ear trick is real, and it's the reason this base earns its keep. Pointed cone ears and a tiny tail: cat. Swap the cones for long teardrops: bunny. Keep the little round domes the base ships with: bear — or a mouse in the right colors. Flatten the ears into soft tubes that hang past the cheeks: dog. Tall cones plus a bushy teardrop tail: fox. Same body, same rounds, five different animals.
Colors finish what the ears start. Orange with white cheeks reads as a fox; gray with a pink nose is a mouse; the exact same silhouette in cream and brown becomes a puppy. You're not designing five toys — you're dressing one very good toy five ways.
That's why the base pattern matters more than any single animal pattern you could download: a cat pattern makes a cat. A base pattern makes whatever you need for the next birthday, market table, or nursery.
How to customize the animal base in the editor

Worsted weight (#4) yarn with a 4 mm (G-6) hook, worked tightly at a standard amigurumi gauge (16 sc × 18 rounds = 10 cm) so the stuffing doesn't show. Exact gauge isn't critical — just crochet tight. Thicker yarn and a bigger hook give a larger, chunkier animal from the same instructions.

How do I add a snout, markings, or a longer tail?
Inside the editor: add extra pieces from the 8 base shapes (a teardrop or tube makes tails and snouts) and their rounds are computed and added to the pattern automatically. At the crochet stage: embroider the nose and mouth, and use duplicate stitch or simple embroidery for markings like stripes and spots. The materials list recommends a safety eye size scaled to your animal's height.
