How to calculate crochet stitch counts

  1. Swatch in the pattern stitch

    Chain about 20 and work a square at least 10 cm / 4 in across in the stitch the pattern uses — sc and dc gauge differently, so swatch the real stitch. Block it if the finished piece will be blocked.

  2. Count, measure, enter

    Count stitches across a row and rows up the middle, measure the width and height they span, and enter the four numbers on the swatch above. Your gauge appears per inch and per cm.

  3. Chain, count, or correct

    Get the starting chain for your target width, the rows for your target height (swatch-based or stitch-height-based), and the adjusted counts if the pattern's gauge isn't yours.

Frequently asked questions

What is gauge in crochet?

Gauge is the number of stitches and rows that fit into a set distance — typically "14 sc and 15 rows = 4 inches". It's how a pattern converts stitch counts into real-world centimeters. Because crochet tension varies hugely between makers, the same pattern at a different gauge produces a genuinely different object, which is why patterns beg you to swatch.

How do I calculate how many chains to start with?

Work a small swatch, find your stitches per inch (the calculator above does this), then multiply by your target width: 3.5 sc per inch × 36 inches = 126 stitches, so chain 127 (one extra for the turning chain in sc — add two for hdc, three for dc). Round to your stitch pattern's multiple if the pattern has one.

How many rows of single crochet make 10 cm?

In worsted weight at average tension, about 10 rows — single crochet runs close to 1 cm per row. Half double crochet gives roughly 7–8 rows, double crochet about 6, and treble about 5. Your hands will differ, which is why the stitch-height estimator above lets you adjust the per-row value.

How do I adjust a crochet pattern if my gauge is different?

Divide the pattern's stitch gauge by yours for the scale factor, then multiply the pattern's stitch counts by the inverse. Pattern says 14 sc per 4 in and you get 16: factor ×0.875, and a 140-stitch pattern row becomes 160 at your gauge. For garments, changing hook size to match gauge is usually easier than rewriting every count.

Why is my crochet gauge different from the pattern's?

Tension is personal — how you hold the yarn, whether you lift loops tall or ride them low, even your mood. Hook material matters too: grippy bamboo tends tighter than slick steel. This is normal and expected; the gauge swatch exists so you can adjust hook size or stitch counts before it matters.
