How to crochet it

  1. Gather your materials

    This free frog crochet pattern is a true stash-buster: about 25 yards of worsted weight (#4) yarn in 5 colors, a 5.0 mm (H/8) hook, a tapestry needle, and scissors. The main green takes most of the yarn — the cheeks and eyes are scraps by any definition.

  2. Check the finished size

    The 24 × 16 chart gives a panel of about 15 × 9 cm in single crochet at a typical 16 sc × 18 rows = 10 cm gauge. In C2C with the same yarn the frog comes out about 30 × 20 cm — a nice pillow front or baby blanket square.

  3. Work the chart from the bottom up

    One square = one single crochet, and both colorways use the same crochet frog chart. Start at the bottom row and work up: odd rows are the right side (read right to left), even rows the wrong side (read left to right). For C2C, start at the bottom-right corner and work diagonally.

  4. Change colors cleanly

    Finish the last stitch of the old color with the new one, and don't carry yarn more than 3–4 stitches. The eyes are the only fiddly bit — two stitches of black, then straight back to green — so drop the black instead of stranding it.

  5. Add a border and finish

    Work one round of single crochet in green around the panel, with 3 sc in each corner, then weave in the ends with the tapestry needle. A light steam block flattens the edges before you sew the frog down.

  6. Turn it into a finished piece
