How to choose a chart you'll actually finish

Start with the technique, not the picture. Every chart here is a grid of stitches, but the fabric it makes depends on how you work that grid. Single crochet gives a dense, sturdy cloth — the forgiving default for a first graphgan, and the technique behind most of the animal charts below. C2C works the same grid on the diagonal in little blocks, so blankets grow fast and the back stays tidy. Tapestry crochet carries the unused colors inside the stitches for a firmer, two-sided fabric that suits bags and wall hangings. If none of those words mean much to you yet, pick single crochet and don't overthink it — you can learn the fancier grids on your second project.

Then be honest about difficulty, because two things decide it: how big the chart is, and how often the color changes. A chart 40 cells wide with four colors is a weekend project; a chart 90 cells wide with twelve colors of confetti is a relationship. For a first graph project, stay under 60 cells and five colors — most of the animal charts were designed to exactly that spec, with the stitch counts printed on the page so you can buy yarn before you commit. The blanket charts run bigger; treat them as second projects unless the pattern page tells you otherwise.

Finally, match the chart to the occasion. A baby gift on a deadline wants a small animal worked into a blanket square or a lovey, not a full-size graphgan. A year of mindful stitching wants the temperature blanket. A birthday for a six-year-old wants the dragon — and nobody's feelings will be hurt if you start it three months early. And if the perfect chart doesn't exist yet (a photo of the dog, the kid's drawing, the family cat), the pattern generator turns any photo into a chart built to the same spec as these, free.

One last thing before you scroll: swatch. Ten minutes of swatching tells you your real gauge, and the yarn calculator turns that gauge into a shopping list. Every chart on this page is an original pixel design or a programmatic conversion, reviewed before publishing — download any of them, no email wall.
