Christmas crochet has a scheduling problem: the good patterns are usually 90-stitch graphgans you should have started in September. How to crochet it

  1. Gather your materials

    Worsted weight (#4) yarn — "Medium #4" in the Craft Yarn Council's standard weight system — plus a 5.0 mm (H/8) hook, a tapestry needle, and scissors. Each free Christmas crochet pattern here uses 40–55 yards total across 2–7 colors, so these are genuine stash-busters: the per-color stitch counts in every legend are your shopping list.

  2. Check the finished size

    In single crochet at a typical 16 sc × 18 rows = 10 cm gauge, the charts come out roughly 12–18 cm per side: the snowflake (25 × 25) is about 14 × 16 cm, the candy cane (29 × 26) about 18 × 14 cm. Worked as C2C, each cell becomes one block and the motifs come out 40–60% larger — pillow-front territory.

  3. Work the chart from the bottom up

    One square = one single crochet, from the bottom row up: odd rows are the right side (read right to left), even rows the wrong side (read left to right). The largest chart (candy cane) is 754 stitches — one evening, maybe two. The full set of six is 3,691 stitches, so a Christmas blanket of all six is a November project, not a September one.

  4. Change colors cleanly

    Finish the last stitch of the old color with the new one, and drop the yarn instead of carrying it more than 3–4 stitches. The details here are all small — the tree's baubles are 1–3 stitches each — so small bobbins keep the backs tidy. For christmas tapestry crochet, carry the unused color inside the stitches instead and the back stays smooth.

  5. Add a border and finish
