How to crochet it

  1. Gather your materials

    About 10 yards of worsted weight (#4) yarn total in two colors, a 5.0 mm (H/8) hook, a tapestry needle, and scissors. This free crochet heart pattern is a true scrap project — the heart color needs under 5 yards, so the oddments jar wins.

  2. Check the finished size

    The 14 × 10 chart gives a panel of about 9 × 6 cm in single crochet at a typical 16 sc × 18 rows = 10 cm gauge — appliqué size. In C2C the same heart comes out roughly 18 × 12 cm, right for a pillow corner or blanket square.

  3. Work the chart from the bottom up

    One square = one single crochet, from the bottom row up: odd rows read right to left, even rows left to right. The whole heart is 140 stitches — under an hour for most crocheters, and both colorways use the same chart.

  4. Change colors cleanly

    Each row has at most two change points — where the heart starts and stops. Finish the last background stitch with the heart color, work across, and switch back the same way. Carry the resting color loosely behind or drop it and rejoin; at two colors, both backs stay tidy.

  5. Finish and sew it down
