How to crochet it

  1. Gather your materials

    About 12 yards of worsted weight (#4) yarn in two colors, a 5.0 mm (H/8) hook, a tapestry needle, and scissors. The star color needs barely 5 yards — this free crochet star pattern exists to use up your yellow and blue oddments.

  2. Check the finished size

    The 16 × 11 chart gives a panel of about 10 × 6 cm in single crochet at a typical 16 sc × 18 rows = 10 cm gauge. In C2C the star comes out roughly 20 × 14 cm — a good blanket-square or pillow-corner size.

  3. Work the chart from the bottom up

    One square = one single crochet, from the bottom row up: odd rows read right to left, even rows left to right. The whole star is 176 stitches, and both colorways follow the same chart — most crocheters finish in a single sitting.

  4. Change colors cleanly

    Each row has at most two change points — where the star enters and exits. Finish the last background stitch with the star color, work across, and switch back the same way. Carry the resting color loosely behind or drop it per row; at this size both backs stay tidy.

  5. Finish and put it everywhere

    Weave in the ends, steam block lightly, and sew the star down: tree-topper appliqué on a gift bag, nursery wall hanging, blanket square, or the corner of a Christmas stocking. Nine stars in a grid is a baby blanket; one gold star on a red square is December sorted.
