How many stitches is one crochet letter?
Each letter in this generator is 5 stitches wide and 7 rows tall — up to 35 cells, though most letters use around 15–20. Letters are separated by 1 blank column, spaces are 3 columns wide, and the chart adds 2 blank rows above and below the word. At a typical worsted gauge of 16 stitches per 10 cm, one letter works out to roughly 3 cm wide and 4.5 cm tall.
Can I chart a whole sentence or phrase?
The generator takes up to 12 characters per chart, which covers names and short words. For a longer phrase, chart each word separately and join them: leave 3 or more blank columns between words on the same row, or stack words on separate bands with blank rows between them — stacked words are the classic layout for throws like the GRANDMA blanket.
How do I crochet letters so they don't slant or warp?
Work flat in rows (not in the round) and count your stitches at the end of every row — a single missed stitch shifts everything above it. Keep even tension on color changes, carry or bobbin the unused color loosely so the fabric doesn't pucker, and block the finished piece. If your single crochet slants, try the yarn under vs yarn over variation that keeps your stitches stacked straight, or work the chart as C2C blocks instead.
Which stitch should I use to work the chart?
Single crochet in rows is the default — one chart cell equals one stitch, worked back and forth starting at the bottom row. The same chart also works for C2C (one cell equals one block, which makes a much bigger blanket), tapestry crochet, or cross-stitch on a single crochet fabric if you prefer to add the letters afterwards.
