How to crochet it

  1. Pick your thread and hook

    Traditional filet uses size 10 cotton thread with a 1.5–2 mm hook — that gives these free filet crochet christmas patterns their lace look, and each motif needs only about 30–35 yards. Want a pillow or blanket panel instead? Worsted (#4) yarn with a 5.0 mm hook works the same chart at roughly double the size.

  2. Learn the two blocks

    Filet has exactly two moves. A filled block is 3 double crochet; an open block is chain 2 plus a double crochet over the space below. Since neighboring blocks share an edge stitch, each new block after the first adds 2 stitches — that's the whole technique, and it's why filet charts are two colors by nature.

  3. Read the chart as filled vs. open

    Every square on the chart is one mesh block: motif stitches are filled blocks, background stitches are open. The snowflake means 125 filled blocks out of 625; the tree 195 out of 567; the ornament 271 out of 567. Work from the bottom row up, reading odd rows right to left and even rows left to right.

  4. Set your starting chain

    Chain 3 per block plus 5 (3 for the first block, 2 for the turning chain): the snowflake's 25 blocks start at ch 80, the tree and ornament's 27 blocks at ch 86. Work a dc in the 8th chain from the hook and the mesh builds itself from there.

  5. Block it — filet demands it

    Filet looks like a fishing net until you block it. Pin the damp piece to exact dimensions, opening every mesh square, and let it dry fully. For the snowflake, brush on fabric starch before pinning and it will hold its shape on the tree or in a window for years.
