How to crochet it

  1. Gather your materials

    Worsted weight (#4) yarn in 4 colors, a 5.0 mm (H/8) hook, a tapestry needle, and scissors. About 25 yards total — mostly the cap red (or pink) and the background, plus scraps of cream and beige for the spots and stem.

  2. Check the finished size

    In single crochet at a typical 16 sc × 18 rows = 10 cm gauge, the 24 × 17 chart gives a mushroom of about 15 × 9 cm — tall and narrow, so it slots into blanket stripes where wider motifs won't fit. In C2C each cell becomes one block, roughly doubling the size for a pillow front.

  3. Work the chart from the bottom up

    One square = one single crochet, starting at the stem. Odd rows are the right side (read right to left), even rows the wrong side (read left to right). The cap dome and spots come in the last third — the spots are small two-stitch clusters, the only real counting moment in this free mushroom crochet pattern.

  4. Change colors cleanly

    Finish the last stitch of the old color with the new one, and drop the yarn instead of carrying it more than 3–4 stitches. Wind the cream for the spots onto a small bobbin — three tiny spot clusters are much easier from a bobbin than from a full skein.

  5. Add a border and finish

    Work one round of single crochet in the background color around the panel, with 3 sc in each corner, then weave in the ends with the tapestry needle. A light steam block evens out the tall panel before sewing.

  6. Turn it into a finished piece
