How to crochet it

  1. Gather your materials

    Worsted weight (#4) yarn in 4 colors, a 5.0 mm (H/8) hook, a tapestry needle, and scissors. About 20 yards in total — the smallest yarn budget on this site — with the body color doing nearly all the work; the legend's per-color stitch counts double as a shopping list.

  2. Check the finished size

    In single crochet at a typical 16 sc × 18 rows = 10 cm gauge, the 26 × 11 chart gives a wide, low panel of about 16 × 6 cm. Worked as C2C with the same yarn, each cell becomes a block and the axolotl comes out around 33 × 14 cm — ideal across the middle of a blanket or pillow.

  3. Work the chart from the bottom up

    One square = one single crochet, from the bottom row up: odd rows are the right side (read right to left), even rows the wrong side (read left to right). Only 11 rows, and the gills frame the face from row one — nearly impossible to get lost. C2C instead? Start at the bottom-right corner and work diagonally — the same crochet axolotl chart works for both.

  4. Change colors cleanly
