Crochet Coaster Patterns

The coaster is the smallest useful colorwork project there is: 441 stitches, one evening, and at the end you own something that protects furniture. These four crochet coaster patterns are charted as 21 × 21 circles — a lemon slice with real segments, a watermelon with 8 black seed stitches, a sun with short rays, and a daisy with separated petals — each with its palette counted on the chart.

Work them in worsted cotton and they come out ≈ 13 cm across, absorbent and machine-washable. A set of four mixed fruits tied with twine is the housewarming gift that actually gets used; a set of six flowers is the Mother's Day version.

How to crochet it

  1. Gather your materials

    Worsted weight (#4) cotton — absorbent, washable, heat-tolerant — a 5.0 mm (H/8) hook, a tapestry needle, and scissors. Each coaster takes about 30 yards; one 50 g ball of cotton makes two coasters. Acrylic is out: it doesn't absorb condensation and can melt under a hot mug.

  2. Check the finished size

    At 16 sc × 18 rows = 10 cm the 21-stitch circle comes out ≈ 13 cm across — the sweet spot for mugs and glasses. For a smaller, firmer coaster, drop to a 4.5 mm hook; for a placemat-adjacent giant, hold two strands with a 6 mm hook.

  3. Choose: work in the round or work flat

    Two honest ways to follow a circular chart. In the round: start from the center and increase as the grid widens, following each ring — the edge comes out truly circular. Flat: work the 21 × 21 as a square panel in rows, then the circle is the colored area — block it round and the square corners disappear under a tight border. Beginners: work flat.

  4. Change colors cleanly

    Carry the idle yarn inside the stitches for runs up to 4–5 cells; cut and rejoin for longer gaps. On the watermelon, work the 8 seed stitches off a small black bobbin instead of carrying black through the red — one bobbin, zero floats.

  5. Edge and block it flat

    One round of single crochet in the rind color around the edge tidies every wobble. Then wet the coaster, press it under a heavy book overnight, and it dries dead flat — the non-negotiable step for anything a glass has to sit on.

  6. Build the gift set

    Four coasters in a stack, tied with twine or ribbon: lemon + watermelon + sun + flower is the crowd-pleaser mix. Six matching flowers in one colorway is the formal version. Include a care card — machine wash cold, dry flat — and the gift looks like it came from a shop that charges more.

What's the best yarn for crochet coasters?

Worsted (#4) cotton: it absorbs condensation instead of letting it pool, survives the washing machine, and tolerates hot mugs. Acrylic fails on all three counts. A 50 g ball makes two coasters, so a 4-ball pack is a full gift set.

Should I crochet coasters in the round or in rows?

Either works on these charts. In the round gives a true circular edge but means managing increases; working the chart as a flat 21 × 21 panel in rows is easier, and the circle appears from the colored area once you add the border round and block. First coaster: flat. Fourth: try the round.

How do I stop coasters from curling?

Cotton plus blocking: wet the finished coaster, pin or press it flat (a heavy book overnight works), and let it dry fully. The single-crochet border round also pulls the edge straight. If it still cups, your tension is tight — go up half a hook size.
