How to crochet it

  1. Gather your materials

    Worsted weight (#4) yarn, a 5.0 mm (H/8) hook, a tapestry needle, and scissors. Each 29 × 29 square takes about 60 yards in 5–6 colors, and the chart fixes every round's color before you start — half-skeins from the stash are exactly what inner rounds are for.

  2. Check the finished size

    One chart makes one ≈ 15 cm square in worsted with a 5 mm hook. Crochet one square and measure yours before planning a project — hook and tension shift the size by a centimeter either way, and that error multiplies by every square you join.

  3. Work the square from the center out

    Follow the chart from the middle ring: rounds of 3-double-crochet clusters with chain spaces between and chain-2 corners at each turn — the cream cells in the chart are the chain spaces, not stitches. Alternate your turning direction each round so the square doesn't twist.

  4. Change colors at the round, never mid-row

    Finish the last cluster of a round, join the new shade in any corner space, and weave the tails as you go. On the sunburst, heart, and star squares the motif colors appear only in the center rounds — work those slowly, then the frame rounds are pure muscle memory.

  5. Decide what one square becomes

    A single square in cotton is a coaster; four joined in a 2 × 2 block make a pillow front; nine make a cushion cover with an envelope back. Keep the palette consistent across squares and the most basic join-as-you-go seam looks intentional.

  6. Turn two squares into a granny square bag

    The simplest granny square bag: make two solid-teal squares, single-crochet them together on three sides (right sides facing), then work 3 rows of single crochet around the opening and add a 60-chain strap. Is a granny square crochet pattern good for beginners?

It's the standard second project after a scarf: one repeated cluster, color changes only at round boundaries, and a finished win in an evening. Start with the solid teal square — no chain gaps to count — then move to the classic.

How many rounds are these granny squares?

The classic and solid charts are a center plus four rounds (29 × 29 stitches); the sunburst, heart, and star add motif rounds in the middle, same final size. At ~15 cm per square in worsted, any of them mixes with the others in one blanket.

What's the difference between a sunburst and a classic granny square?

The classic is identical clusters every round — meditative, fast. The sunburst replaces the center with a daisy (puff-stitch petals in real life, the yellow ring in this chart) before returning to plain rounds. Sunbursts look fancier; classics stack faster.

Can I really make a granny square bag from these charts?

Yes — the solid square was designed for it: two squares joined on three sides plus a strap is a working market bag. Use cotton or a cotton blend, line it if you can, and skip the classic (gaps) version for bags unless you like visible groceries.

Why do my granny squares twist or ruffle?

Twisting: you're turning the same direction every round — alternate it. Ruffling: too many corner chains; these charts use chain-2 corners, which stays flat at normal tension.
